Heroic Bloodshed Reviews
Heroic Bloodshed has bean since the 80's a popular sub-genre of Hong Kong action films. The first real hit from these films occured in 1986 with John Woo's ground-breaking "A Better Tommorow". Since then their have bean various world wide hit's such as "City On Fire" and "Hard Boiled". One film from this genre, "The Killer", was a cult hit around the world but was very dissapioting in the box office in it's native Hong Kong. This was actualy the first Heroic Bloodshed film I ever saw and is a great introduction into the genre. These reviews are of the more popular HB films and I will add more in the future.

"The Killer" (1989)
The Killer is one of my most favourite Hong Kong actioners .The film is directed by John Woo one of the most aclaimed action directors of all time. The film tells the story of a hitman (Chow Yun Fat) who blinds a singer and feels responsible for her. When he decides to leave the profession the triad boss atempts unsuccessfuly to kill him and there begins a batle of heroic bloodshed. The film is packed with full on action scenes of rapid gunfire and explosions .This is truly a great action movie and one of John Woo's finest .The story line is well constructed and the performances by Chow Yun Fat and Danny Lee are very good.I highly recomendthis movie to anyone interested in Hong Kong actioners and this would be a goodintroduction to the genre.
"Hard Boiled" (1995)
John Woo's heroic bloodshed film "Hard Boiled"stars Hong Kong superstar Chow Yun Fat as anundercover cop trying to bring an arms dealer(Antony Wong) to justice. Chow suffering the loss of a fellow cop takes the case personaly and with the help of a crooked cop he starts a batle of epic proportions. This is one of Woo's most popular movies and also one of his most violent. The action is superb and the warehousescene is among my alltime favourites. The storyline wasn't as good as some of Woo's earlier films but it is still very entertaining .Iwould recomend this film to all John Woo fans who I think will realy enyoy it.
"Bullet In The Head"
John Woo's "Bullet in The Head" is an ultra-violent tale of friendship, crime and revenge. The story concerns three friends who after killing a gang leader flee toSaigon during the Viet Nam war tocapitalise on the lack of law and orderthere .The movie is quite violent (even for John Woo standards)and some actionscenes are among my all time favourites .Idid enjoy this film except for the ending butdont let that put you off from an otherwisepretty good movie .I heard they actialychanged the ending from the the originalwich had a less violent end.I thought theperformances were good especialy from Simon Yam . I recomend this movie to John Woo fans who will proberbly rank it among their favourites.
"City On Fire" (1986)
Ringo Lam's "City On Fire" stars Chow Yun Fat as a cop who goes undercover to infiltrate a group of jewel thieves. While he dous this fellow cops suspect him of being corrupt and his girl-friend considers leaving him. This is a great movie wich entertains with a good story and excelent performances instead of action scenes. Chow is at his charismatic best and Danny Lee is also good as one of the jewel thieves. This is one of Ringo Lams best films and I recomend this movie to those wanting a good story rather than Woo style action scenes. This film also inspired the hit U.S film "Reservoir Dogs" which was directed by Quentin Tarantino.
"A Better Tomorrow" (1986)
John Woo's "A Better Tommorow" is a classic heroic bloodshed film wich stars Chow Yun Fat and Ti Lung. The film tels the story of gangsters who are running a counterfeiting scam. One of the gangsters Kit has a brother who is in the police force and when he finds out about his life of crime the young policeman feels huge disrespect for him. This was aground breaking film and has sporned 2 sequels.I enjoyed this film because of the good performances and interesting storyline. The action scenes arenot as good as Woo's later films but it dous have his trademark slo-mo gun fights which he is famousefor. If you are a John Woo or Chow Yun Fat fan thisis a must see classic you should not miss.
"City War"
"City War" stars Chow Yun Fat and Ti Lung who were the legendary duo from the John Woo smash hit "A Better Tomorrow". They both play cops who are friends with Chow as a swinging bachelor and Ti as a man in a relationship. The film has plenty of comedy and its only at the end were you get to see any reel action scenes. I found this film to be dissapointing because the story line wasn't very compelling and the two tallented leeds were waisted on silly roles. I think this film was a resonable effort but could have bean a lot better with a more tallented director.
