Bruce Lee (1940-1973)
Bruce Lee is a true legend and no one has caused the same impact on Hong Kong cinema. Bruce was born in 1940 in California and in 1941 left withhis parents for Hong Kong. Bruce learned martialarts from an early age. In 1958 he took up boxingand became very successful. After regulary fightingon the streets Bruce was sent by his parents back to the U.S where he was employed in a restaurant. He enrolled in a high school and began teaching his martial arts skills in parks and gyms. In 1961 Bruce enroles in the University of Washington to study philosophy. Later in 1963 he began his Jun Fan Gung Fu institute which was near his University campus. In 1964 while demonstrating his "one inch punch" he was asked to go for a screen test by a television network employee. He was soon given a role in the T.V series "The Green Hornet" wich was a huge step in his career. While in the series he made several guest appearences in other T.V shows such as "Batman". Bruce, after not getting the role in the series "Kung Fu" goes back to Hong Kong where he made the classic movie "The Big Boss"(1971) which boosted his career. He then made "Fist of Fury" "Way of The Dragon" and "Game of Death" which were all made in 1972, and gave Bruce huge financial success. Bruce was now a huge star in Hong Kong and the world. Bruce in 1973 began production on "Enter The Dragon" which was a Hong Kong/U.S.A project directed by Robert Clouse. This was to become his biggest world wide hit but also his last completed film. On the 20th of july 1973 bruce died because of a cerebaledema (swelling of the brain) he was still to finishhis production "Game of Death " which was later released with scenes from his other movies and with new scenes by various doubles. Bruce's death put Hong Kong cinema into a state of mourning and despare. 25,000 people attended his funeral. Bruce was and always will be the king of martial arts cinema.
